About BT Ireland
About BT Ireland
BT Ireland is the all island arm of BT Group, the world's oldest communications company. Since its origin in 1846, BT has gone on to become one of the world’s leading communications services companies with a footprint in over 500 countries. Our purpose is to use the power of communication to create a better world.
In the Republic of Ireland, BT is the second largest fixed line operator in the country by revenue. Our core business here lies in providing networked IT solutions to global multi-national corporations (MNCs), indigenous exporters, government and major enterprises. BT’s global reach, with connectivity and collaboration services offering across the globe, underpins the success of major organisations looking to address global markets from their hubs there in Ireland.
We are a leader in the provision of wholesale network services for other communication providers who use our network to provide network, voice and broadband services to their customers. We also operate the 999/112 emergency call answering service on behalf of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources
We operate the country’s leading commercial data centre campus based across two independent yet interconnected facilities in Citywest in Dublin and an additional facility in Belfast. We have invested over €60 million in the past 10 years to increase the capacity and efficiency of our centre, which is the only specific ISO 20000 and 270001 accredited data centre in Ireland. We provide a suite of SLA driven solutions ranging from core co-location and high performance internet bandwidth to secure ‘Infrastructure as a Service’ solutions that are catered to customer needs, be it shared, dedicated, scalable or fixed
In Northern Ireland, BT is the leading communications provider to consumers and small-medium businesses and is also the leading networked IT services partner of government and major customers.
We are responsible for building one of the world’s most advanced communications infrastructures and made Northern Ireland the first region outside London to achieve 90% broadband availability. We are currently in the process of delivering on a new Government backed project to provide improved broadband services for over 45,000 additional premises across Northern Ireland, in some of its most remote and rural locations.
In 2013, BT launched its first TV proposition, BT Sport, which attracted over five million customers in its first season. BT Sport is offered free to BT broadband customers across the UK and in the Republic Ireland, is offered exclusively within the Setanta Sports TV package. Since its launch the channel has secured exclusive broadcast rights to major tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and secured additional rights to broadcast live coverage of other major events such as Moto GP racing, UFC, NBA basketball and European Cup Rugby.
BT is committed to using the power of communications technology to improve lives and ways of doing business - without it costing the earth. We do this through our Better Future programme which focuses on three main areas - connecting people digitally, making sure we do more environmental good than harm and providing skills and technology to support good causes.
Employee involvement is a key element of this programme and BT Ireland people are actively involved in many initiatives in our communities. The biggest event that we organise from start to finish is the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, a powerful, grassroots initiative designed to raise schools’ engagement in the critical subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths. The exhibition celebrated its 50th year in 2014 and broke all records for participation and visitors with 2,000 entries from schools across Ireland and almost 50,000 visitors to the RDS in Dublin over the three days of the exhibition.
